Kwan-Young Chun: Aggregation
December 6 2010 - January 28 2011
Mixografia, Los Angeles

Mixografía® is pleased to present the first print editions by Korean artitst Kwang-Young CHUN at the gallery in downtown Los Angeles on vew from December 6, 2010 through January 28, 2011. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 11am until 5pm, and by appointment. (The gallery will close on December 24 and re-open January 3 for the Winter holiday) This exhibition will coincide with the artist’s 2010 one-person show in Beijing, China.

Beginning in the summer of 2007 when Kwang-Young Chun was first offered the resources and technologies of the Mixografía® Workshop by master printer Luis Remba, the artist immediately began to experiment with the relief print, first by creating a radical volumetric collage which proved impossible to print. Finally after a successive attempts, a method was established from which a successful printing plate was made with exacting definition of the subtle nuances of Mr. Chun’s mulberry-paper wrapped forms and the first successful print pulled 3 years later.

Over the years, Chun has accumulated a massive trove of discarded books and manuscripts from which his intricate artworks are made. The contents of these books, the handmade mulberry paper leaves, are the foundation from which the artist carefully cuts and wraps thousands of foam blocks creating an undulating puzzle-like wave across the surface “picture plane,” forming, in the words of one critic, a surface “alive and bristling” in a kind of “painting, that is not really a painting.” Until now, the artist has not been able to consistently transform these ideas into the print medium. “Aggregation-10 #1,” 2010 and its slightly larger partner “Aggregation-10 #2,” 2010, are his first print editions utilizing the Mixografía® relief printing technique.

Workshop tours are also available by appointment, and can be arranged by contacting(323)232-1158.
